The new standards: ISO20906 Acoustics "Unattended monitoring of aircraft sound in the vicinity of airports" and the new German Specification DIN45643 - Measurement and assessment of aircraft noise- are specifying the requirements of a modern airport noise monitoring system. This paper describes the consequences of these new specifications to existing airport noise monitoring systems in praxis. One topic is the specified calibration procedure in ISO20906 and DIN45643 which means significant changes for some airports to the given praxis of onsite calibration with an external calibrator. The specifications made recommendations for the location of noise monitoring terminal. The paper demonstrates that many existing location do not fulfil the given requirements for an optimal location of a monitoring terminal. The specifications define also the treatment of time periods when acoustical measurement is not possible due to strong wind or thunderstorms, technical breakdowns etc. The classification and identification of noise events in noise monitoring systems is presented. The paper describes in detail the reporting which an airport noise monitoring system should include according DIN45643. The monitoring system should also estimate the uncertainty of the whole measurement.
