POEM: Application to Prediction and Mapping of Road Traffic Noise and the Practice

The authors have developed new GIS software for predicting and evaluating road traffic noise based on ASJ RTN-Model 2008 (hereafter, described as POEM), and the outline has been reported at the inter-noise 2010. POEM is equipped with the prediction method at signalized intersection, depressed and semi-underground roads, flat/overhead roads and double-deck viaducts, as well as at receivers behind building complex. In addition, it can support decision-makings for noise reduction measures by the calculation of the evaluation manual for the Environmental Quality Standards for Noise enforced by the Ministry of the Environment, the Government of Japan, the authors' original methods both for practical use for noise mapping based on the ASJ RTN-Model 2008 and for effective search of optimum reduction measures of road traffic noise. This paper introduces the authors' original techniques in GIS for data processing to realize the above predictions, and some examples of applying POEM to the prediction calculation and the mapping of road traffic noise for several specific cases in a city.
