In order to obtain the characteristics and effectiveness of ring damped wheel in reducing noise and vibration, a series of experiments are conducted both in the laboratory and on the field. The laboratory tests include the measurement and analysis on the effect of damping ring in a free springy suspending status on wheel model damping and its vibration and its sound radiation characters under axial and lateral excitations to the wheel. The wheel vibration, near-field acoustic pressure level and radiating sound power are measured and analyzed in evaluating the characteristics and effectiveness of ring damped wheel in reducing noise and vibration. The field tests include the measurement and analysis of the effect of the damping ring on sound radiation of the wheel in service, in which we are deeply concerned with the sound pressure of the ISO standard points outside the vehicle, the near-field sound pressure on-board and the noise from or besides the bogie. Experiment and research results show that, a conspicuous reduction effect can be exerted by the damping ring on both the wheel squeal noise and vibrant sound radiation under the lateral excitation, but the damping ring has a relatively low effectiveness of the reduction in wheel-rail rolling noise and vibrant sound radiation under the radial excitation. The findings can be used in optimization design for low-noise metro wheels.
