Super-compact LTCC-based multi-layered CRLH transmission lines for UWB applications

This paper studies a multi-layered composite right/left-handed transmission line fabricated by using the latest low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology. Ultra wideband response from 3.1 GHz to 16.5 GHz in theory and 3.4 GHz to 18.0 GHz in experment were attained in a super-compact size of 1.5 × 1.5 × 0.95 mm³. As a specific feature of the LTCC-based design, a bandwidth of the left-handed branch is inherently large enough to cover a whole UWB band from 3.1 GHz to 10.6 GHz due to the small contribution of right-handed circuit parameters. A method to control the bandwidth with keeping a flat passband response is also developed for new type of wideband devices.
