PV VS CPV AND CSP: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF TECHNOLOGIES AND COST ROADMAPS

There is signficantly increasing interest in solar installations for micro-grid and small utility applications. In particular, numerous developing countries are looking to establish power sources for the local regions based on renewables and are exploring the options for energy including: PV, CPV, CSP, wind, and hybrid plants. This paper provides material developed from various engagements and from market analysis regarding the considerations for PV vs CPV vs CSP. The overall context is examined and then the specific application of a smaller utility is considered. The primary conclusions are that PV has a lead for solar solutions in several regards including: PV is the lowest installation cost, the lowest O&M, and can be installed in modular units of any kW size. The case for CPV is more challenging, and CSP even more. However, CPV and CSP have the higher capacity factors. The main potential for CSP is that energy storage is possible. This paper outlines the various considerations developed in detail in a more extensive Market Report and provides an overview of the comparisons including wind. It examines micro-grid considerations, but also grounds the analysis in market research and technology research for the general grid-connected configuration. Finally, a market sizing and assessment for growth is made for the "hidden" micro-grid/off-grid segment, as seen in developing countries.
