Evaluation of an Irradiated Zr-2.5Nb Pressure Tube Removed From the Ignalina RBMK Reactor

The RBMK pressure tube removed from the Ignalina NPP was investigated at Studsvik Nuclear. The destructive examination performed after visual inspection included metallographical evaluation and hydrogen measurements, as well as the tension and fracture toughness tests at room temperature and at 300 °C. No significant degradation in material properties has been revealed. The RBMK tube was in very good condition when removed from the reactor and would have been satisfactory for further service.
