Spatio-temporal analysis of urban built-up area extension in Yantai City based on multi-source remote sensing images

The expansion of urban land is the most significant part of the land use / land cover changes (LUCC). This paper will study the expansion of built-up area of Yantai City and analyze which reasons drive mechanism and other related issues. Based on the multi-temporal satellite remote sensing images (including TM and SPOT) of Yantai, through GIS technology, and combined with land-use change in recent years, we reveal that Yantai's built-up area extends about 267 square kilometers in 1992–2004 years, in which residents building area, traffic area and mining land area have a significant increase, forest and river area although slightly increases, and cultivated land, water and other land area was decreased. The reasons come from economic development, population growth, traffic development, industry structure and government policies.
