CERTIFICATION CRITERIA FOR SUSTAINABLE BIOMASS FOR ENERGY NECESSARY TO CREATE A GLOBAL MARKET

World Bioenergy Association has shown that there is a potential to mobilize biomass for energyworldwide in quantities sufficient to meet global energy demand. A strong development of the bioenergy sector willrequire trade in biomass and in fuels, like liquid biofuels and pellets. The industry, both suppliers and users ofbiomass for energy, need a set of criteria on a global level to be able to create a global market. In a position paperWBA presents minimum universal certification criteria for sustainable biomass for energy. These criteria are basedon scientific research carried out by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences [1,2,3]. The criteria cover allareas of sustainability - environmental, social and economic. They can be applied to all types of biomass for energy –from forestry, agriculture, waste, and others.The minimum universal criteria for sustainable biomass for energy consist of 14 selected sustainability criteria thatwere developed after comparing the standards, principles, criteria and indicators developed by the existing andemerging voluntary standards around the world and can be seen as the building blocks for the new labeling system.
