ZnO nanoparticles were prepared and applied as seeds onto poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) textiles. Then the growth of ZnO nanorods on PET fibers was carried out in a solution containing zinc nitrate hexahydrate and hexamethylene tetramine. Layers of SiO2 were coated on the surface of the as-grown ZnO nanorods which were modified by polyelectrolytes through layer-by-layer self-assembly, followed by hydrophobization with hexadecyltrimethoxysilane. UV-durable superhydrophobic PET textiles with UV-shielding property were obtained.
