A new type of organically soluble polyaniline (PANI) was prepared by emulsion polymerization using sodium alcohol ether sulphate (AES) as dopant and ammonium persulfate (APS) as oxidant. It is found that AES can act as very good plasticizing and protonating agents for PANI, and doping was carried out by the in situ doping emulsion polymerization route. The as-prepared product is soluble in various solvents, including water, ethanol, toluene, and dlethylene glycol dibutyl ether. The spectral and electrical properties are compared with those of the polyaniline prepared by an aqueous polymerization pathway using hydrochloric acid as protic acid. Further, conductive flexible composite films of the protonated PANI with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were also prepared and studied for their conductivity and related properties. Percolation threshold is occurring at very low weight percentage of PANI and a maximum conductivity value of 0.035 ??1cm?1 was obtained for the PANI/PVA composite film with PANI content of 7 wt.%.
