Glary silkworm silk: preparation of fluorescent functionalized silk fibers

Silkworm silks have shown great potential application in many fields due to their high strength, superb toughness and good biocompatibility. In this work, functionalized silkworm silks were fabricated via molecular recognition between fluorescent molecules 2-brome-7-(4-nitrylstyryl)-9,9-dioctylfluorene (BNF) and the silkworm silks. The resulting fluorescent silk fibers exhibited strong fluorescence emission and good mechanical properties. Thus, the work will provide many potential applications for silkworm silk fibers in materials science, medicine and biology.
