The development and fielding of ceramic armor technology has accelerated with the requirements to provide high ballistic performance at reduced weight for a wide range of military platforms and applications. This overview paper will expand on the technical aspects of the presentations given at the 2001 PACRIM IV Conference in Hawaii and the 2006 30th International Conference on Advanced Ceramics and Composites held in Cocoa Beach, Florida. The intent is to examine the significant developments of ceramic armor technology as seen by the author over the last 40 years with emphasis on the primary evolution and developments that advanced the technology. An understanding of this chronology will set the direction for future developments and applications.
