Guide splined saws are extensively used in the lumber industry. It has been found that a saw which is free on the arbor and restrained from lateral motion by lubricated guide-pads, (Fig. 1), exhibits high levels of cutting accuracy. This study analyzes the effect of changing different parameters of a splined saw on the lowest critical speed of it. The first step is to develop a numerical model of guided saw, and verify its accuracy by experimental results. The equation of motion is developed based on linear theory and results are a fourth order partial differential equation. An in-house code is used for numerical analysis. So, it is possible to change the parameters of the equation to determine the effect on the critical speed. The PLACKETT-BURMAN Design procedure [1] is used to determine the effect of adding a restraining spring to the blade. This design procedure is used for identifying important factors from among many potential factors in a system. It is used to determine the sensitivity of the system to its parameters.
