This paper will review some typical refractory-related problems within the glass sector. The author will examine symptoms, investigate root causes and make recommendations on corrective actions. Furthermore, advice will be offered on how best to minimise and avoid problems.Through a careful programme of testing of refractories for a given installation in-service issues can be minimised. In addition, the acquisition of such test data can assist in corrective measures should problems ever arise, thereby speeding up the problem-solving process. Using the skills and expertise of a reliable consultant engineer prior to the commissioning of a job can alleviate process and operational issues. Using modelling techniques such as FEA (Finite Element Analysis) to simulate situations before and after commissioning can identify and quantify the value of potential design changes, improve efficiency and often avoid damage to refractory linings.
