An architecture framework is required for scalable systems to promote reusable components that can be employed across multiple platforms. A framework alone does not guarantee reusability but provides a structured approach centered on hardware design and standards, middleware and software applications that enforce the architecture framework paradigm allowing for the benefits of savings through technology reuse, scalability, and reliability. The Apache Block HI avionics architecture is designed using a framework that originated with the Manned/Unmanned Common Architecture Program (MCAP) and has enabled the use of third party applications, application software reuse, and code scalability. This paper discusses the architecture framework progression starting with the hardware and software infrastructure design approaches and ending with a description of field demonstration experiences that illustrate the benefits of the Open Systems Gateway, a key enabler to interoperability.
