PARTICLE ANALYZERS AS PROFIT CENTERS

For years people have looked upon analyzers as cost centers and a necessary evil. This paper will illustrate examples of how particle analyzers can be used to increase profit and optimize process control. The first example is in the discharge water of a desalter. Measurement of the particle concentration, in parts per million (PPM), and particle distribution leads to improved process control by increasing yield rates and decreasing discharge to waste treatment. In the second example, the dissolving of solids (a common issue in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries) is presented to show how improvement in processing time is accomplished by determining the precise moment that an additive is dissolved and in solution. This is a good process analytical technology (PAT) application and improves cycle time while checking the raw material particle size and concentration.
