A project was started to reduce the amount of manpower devoted to maintaining and stabilizing chromatographic performance to support refinery and chemical plant labs. Over eight years, the scope of this effort expanded to incorporate emerging gas chromatographic hardware and thoroughly rethinking how process gas chromatography is done. The effort now spans both laboratory needs and process requirements with the following considerations: 1. Complex analyses must be automated and made both more robust and operationally simplified. 2. Flexibility in the separation and detection systems must cover the breadth of analytical requirements. 3. The Gas Chromatograph (GC) must be fast, capable of automatically reporting results compatible with control of the process. 4. The demand for calibration and recalibration, operational and maintenance skills, and costs must be minimized. This paper presents the multi-organization effort leading to an all-new highly modular plug and play instrument systern with versatility that spans on-line, laboratory, and transportable applications.
