Long Term Operating Experience with Corrosion Controlin Industrial Axial Flow Compressors

One of the primary causes of flow path failures inindustrial axial flow compressors has been attributed to oris related to corrosion damage. Over the years, a numberof corrosion mitigations have been utilized by variousmanufacturers and users. This paper summarizes severallong term monitoring and assessment programs thatevaluated the effectiveness of the mitigation steps andmakes recommendations for future operation. Themonitoring programs included detailed metallurgicalanalyses of corroded stator and rotor blades, materialcaptured in inlet filter pads, flow path deposits andcorrosion coupons. The hardware was examined atvarious run time intervals that ranged between 2 to 12years. When possible, corrosion damage was mapped andquantified. The hardware was then returned to service andlater re-evaluated in the exact same locations after theadditional operating time.
