This paper describes a trade study on a single-stage arrival management concept to implement continuous descent operations in high-density traffic using time-based metering and two onboard 4D guidance methods: Required Time of Arrival and continuous 4D guidance. The paper presents the fast-time simulation capability in use at Boeing Research & Technology Europe to evaluate such air traffic management concepts. Results are obtained on the operational performance of the individual guidance methods in the proposed arrival concept and on the effect of mixing these flight management system capabilities.
