Within today's tentative security-aware climate, our world's navies must operate within a domain of pressures and uncertainties, putting increasing tensions on safety and security measures. With mines and improvised explosive devices a constant threat from terrorist organisations, to neutralise such hazards is imperative for our subsea, port and harbour security. An Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV)-based approach will speed up operations and help locate and identify possible threats while removing divers from the highest risk tasks. The key factors for military operators are mission safety, accuracy and timeliness - factors which are more easily achievable through smart technology.
