Man-Machine interfaces and remote control of unmanned systems is the critical link between the soldier and unmanned system. While the reliability and performance of the unmanned vehicles is on the rise the same has not been true for the controls. The controls and computer interfaces have been platform specific requiring adaptation for each platform type and consisted of two separate elements. System integrators and users have been searching for a universal platform that combines both elements together in a reliable input devices and controls with high end computing power yet in a small and soldier friendly package that can operate a multitude of vehicles and payloads without having to re-design the controller and the input device package every time new features are added or a new vehicle is fielded. The proposed paper describes the design and development of a new universal controller that has been the product of a combined development effort of Amrel and Bokam and how user and system developers input has been utilized in the development of this device The presented package contains input devices and packaging using controls from a family of products based on an award winning monolithic solid state technology that specifically addressed universality of applications, reliability and performance. The brains in the box combines the top of the line high speed computing capability along with all features, software and visual and voice interfaces that are needed to support a wide range of platforms and vehicles. Discussed shall be applicability and Human Factors Engineering associated with the input devices and package as well as universality of features to address multiple platform needs as well as reliability life and packaging to support field operations in harsh environments.
