INVESTMENT CASTING OF SURFACES WITH MICROHOLES AND THEIR POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS

The usual way of realizing microstructured features on metallicsurfaces is to generate the designated pattern on each single partby means of laser ablation, electro discharge machining or micromilling. A disadvantage of these process chains is the limitedproductivity due to the additional processing of each part. Theapproach taken by this project is to replicate microstructuredsurfaces via investment casting. The main research objective dealswith the investigation of single process steps of the investmentcasting process with regard to the molding accuracy. Todemonstrate the potential of microcast surfaces, current results forthe casting of a microstructured hydrophobic surface will beshown.
