EXPLORING GNSS TECHNOLOGY FOR DISASTER MANAGEMENT IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

Disaster Management has evolved over the decades from search for disaster struck areas with search areasextending tens of kilometres to using satellite based technologies for early warning, aid navigation, search andrescue, recovery operations carried out swiftly saving lives, resources. This paper addresses the use of GlobalNavigation Satellite System (GNSS) along with other satellite based technologies such as Remote Sensing(RS), Mobile Communications for effectively carrying out disaster management and discuss in detailearthquake scenario. Such technologies are not only used for disaster management but for disasterpreparedness and early warning, disaster information, impact analysis of disasters. Since the possession ofthese technologies are limited to some countries, there is a need for data exchange and services sharing foreffectively monitoring and mitigating disasters in countries without these satellite based technologies. The useof GNSS technology for disaster management in Thailand will then be discussed, followed byrecommendations for policy implementation.
