Birmingham Bridge Rocker Bearing Failure and Retrofit

On February 8th, 2008 the steel expansion rocker bearings at Pier 10S failed, causing the steel plate girders to fall on the pier cap. Temporary shoring towers were installed to support the failed spans and relieve the load on the pier. A forensic investigation determined the cause of the rocker bearing failure, which changed how PENNDOT inspects expansion rocker bearings. Pier 10S was demolished and rebuilt, while Pier ION was retrofitted with new bearings and foundation.
