Emergency Micropile Retrofit for the Interstate 94 Bridge over Riverside Drive

Reconstruction of the Interstate 94 (I-94) bridges over Riverside Drive required staged part-width construction tomaintain traffic in both directions for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). During the initial stage(Stage I) of the bridge construction, movements of the existing I-94 bridges and Riverside Drive were significantenough to require temporary closures and emergency stabilization and repair of the I-94 Bridges. The eastbound (EB)lanes remained closed until the existing pier footings were retrofitted using micropiles. Settlement monitoringincluded the use of an automated monitoring system to confirm reduced movements.
