The purpose of this study was to know the characteristics of Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB) in the South Sea of Korea by using in situ (oceanic and meteorological data) and multi-satellite data such as chlorophyll a from SeaWiFS, sea surface temperature (SST) from NOAA, surface geostrophic current from TOPEX/Poseidon, and surface wind from QuikSCAT. These data are used to trace out the factors which influences on the occurrences of HAB. Based on in situ data, the total occurrences of HAB have the highest in Yeosu coastal area from 2002 to 2008, the occurrences of HAB dominantly distributed on August and then mean water temperature was 24~26°C. Meteorological data on August during 2002~2008 showed the mean air temperature of 25.51°C, precipitation of 8.9 mm/day, and sunshine duration of 5.5 h/day. The light winds with 2~5 m/s were favorable for blooming. The input of Cochlodinium polykrikoides (C. polykrikoides) with nutrients from the South China Sea by Tsushima Warm Current (TWC) caused HAB in the offshore of the South Sea of Korea. The multi- satellite data images have clearly indicated the intrusion of Changjiang Dilute Water (CDW), TWC, upwelling which caused by current, and cyclonic eddies in the South Sea of Korea.
