Air chamber and free air dispersed throughout the water are two efficient means of protection of a discharge duct from water hammer damages. The paper presents the results regarding the extreme pressures in the discharge duct of a pumping installation, obtained by numerical simulation of the water hammer phenomenon in both cases of protection with air. Advantages and disadvantages of each method are revealed, aiming to make the best choice for the protection solution in engineering design.
