In order to reduce the fuel consumption, the shipping cost and the pollution to the environment, CSBC develops the technology of energy saving 10% (ES - 10) on the well designed 1,700 TEU container vessel. The objective of cutting 10 % propulsive power is approached by two directions: to reduce the ship resistance by hull form improvement and to increase the propulsion efficiency by tip fin propeller, pre-swirl generator, ES propeller cap, twisted rudder, rudder fin and rudder skeg. The program dealing with various design aspects are systematically studied through theoretical analysis, CFD simulation and ship model tests. The final performance are confirmed and fine tuned at HSVA, Germany. Every optimum design aspect is tested individually and then the best combination of design aspects is surveyed by systematically testing the possible sets. Totally 10.3 % power reduction is successfully obtained by the new stern, best combination of propulsion devices and optimum trim condition, that is, the goal of ES-10 is fully achieved.
