The objective of the research was to develop an advanced traveler information system framework that supported individual requirement for travelers. Advanced traveler information system is related to comprehensive sources and diversified forms of traffic data distributed in heterogeneous systems. The difficulty of data integration of heterogeneous systems demands a proper method to solve the problem. Due to SOA's contribution to the integration of heterogeneous systems, the paper focuses on the designing and implementation of SOA-based traveler information system. This system uses a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) that contains four roles. These include: a service registry, an integrating platform, service requesters and service providers. Then four key technologies are proposed, including requirement identification, service matching, service composition and service delivery. Furthermore, the paper describes the process of the system and a way of realizing the system by the application of Web Service. Finally, we implement a traveler information system for the city of Beijing. It uses the Web service technology to encapsulate real-time traffic service, route planning service and map inquiry service; then a new service is composed of real-time traffic data and route planning data by applying service composition algorithm. The result is displayed with a GIS map on mobile software. The architecture of this system not only improves the efficiency of system interoperability, but also provides a platform that can effectively realize service integration when needed. Therefore, it is an appropriate way of designing a traveler information system.
