EVALUATING THE EFFICACY OF THE COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAM SCORES IN LIEU OF THE AT-SAT AT EMBRY-RIDDLE AERONAUTICAL UNIVERSITY

In 2004, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implemented the Air Traffic Selection and Training (AT-SAT) battery that became the FAA's primary screening instrument in the hiring process for new air traffic controllers. The purpose of this study was to determine if college entrance aptitude exam scores could be used in lieu of the AT-SAT to select Collegiate Training Initiative (CTI) students who are interested in a career as an Air Traffic Control Specialist (ATCS) in the FAA. The cost of administering the AT-SAT test could be eliminated if a college entrance exam score could be used as an initial screen for ATCS candidates. A quantitative analysis of the correlation between college entrance exams from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University students and AT-SAT scores was performed to test the hypothesis that college entrance exams are as effective in selecting potentially successful ATCS candidates as the FAA's AT-SAT test. The results from the survey provide evidence that a strong relationship does exist between college entrance aptitude exam scores and the AT-SAT.
