When uniform drying induces cracks in a thin layer of paste, cracks grow slowly enough to be observed with the naked eye. Such crack growth was investigated experimentally by using paste of calcium carbonate fine powder and water. It was found that the crack speed is determined by the increase rate of tension in a layer, not by the tension itself. A theoretical approach is also proposed based on a spring network model by incorporating the effects of negative pore pressure and plastic deformation. The results indicate that the drying-rate dependence of crack speed can be caused by the competition between plastic relaxation and crack growth.
