Method and apparatus for applying a grid of hot melt adhesive to a textile, for producing bonding layers in clothing, comprises a transfer process which produces two layers. The coating operations comprise: (a) silk screen printing with a hot melt adhesive paste and (b) applying a second paste, after which the layers are dried at a temperature 5 - 50 deg C below the melting point of the adhesive, a protective cover then being applied. When required for use the layers are heated to a temperature 5 -35 deg C above the melting point of the adhesive under a pressure of 1 - 20 cN/cm2 for 1 - 6 seconds and the protective layer removed, exposing the adhesive.
