Due to the current infection rate of orthopedic implants and the associated treatment involving six weeks of antibiotic therapy and two additional surgical operations, there is motivation to develop a one-stage re-implantation procedure. Here, we have fabricated polyelectrolyte multilayers incorporating gentamicin using the layer-by-layer deposition process for use as a device coating to fight an existing bone infection in a direct exchange process. This study has demonstrated that a layer-by-layer film can efficaciously fight a bone infection in vivo, and opens the door to the possibility of developing a multi-therapeutic film for optimized, synergistic treatment of pain, infection, and bone resorption.
