Self-healing materials are a new class of smart materials that have the capability to heal themselves when they are damaged without the need for external intervention of any kind. An introduction into the design and testing of microencapsulation-based self-healing materials will be presented along with a discussion of the various chemistries that have emerged. Discussions on the potential applications of self-healing technologies will focus on the development and evaluation of self-healing coatings.
