Nanocurcumin, a novel PLGA based nanoparticle system was developed to overcome the aqueous solubility and bioavailability limitations of curcumin. In the form of polymeric nanoparticles, a prolonged and sustained release of curcumin was achieved without affecting its anticancer properties which was proven in HeLa cells. The extent of caspase activation induced by curcumin entrapped polymer nanoparticles was significantly higher than that of free curcumin. PLGA 50:50 and 75:25 were selected for a comparative study where PLGA 50:50 showed a faster release and better cytotoxicity due to its optimum hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance.
