To develop topical drug delivery systems for triclosan, drug in-adhesive type topical patches were formulated; several different skin penetration enhancers were added to the pressure sensitive adhesives and the release and permeation profiles were obtained. Interestingly release rates were the greatest from the adhesive without an enhancer compared with the patches with an enhancer whilst permeation results demonstrated the greatest permeation rate from the adhesive formulated with the oleic acid enhancer. These results show that the release and permeation rates were independent however both were influenced by use of permeability enhancers.
