It has been established that the combination of ultrasound irradiation and gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) is quite effective in controlling the release of polymer microparticles. The electrospinning techniques were employed for the fabrication uniform size alginate microparticles. Results show that one could control the size of emulsions from 100 μm to 1500 μm in diameter (with a variation of less than 10%) by altering the electrostatic forces. The synthesized alginate microparticles were biodegradable, which could be used of oral and subcutaneous injection. Drugs and Au nanoparticles could be loaded in the same alginate microparticle by one-step process. Results show that the encapsulation and in vitro release of a model drug, diclofenac sodium, to enhance the effect of controlled release. The composite microcapsules are potential candidates for an ultrasound-targeting drug delivery system.
