The synthesis and application of a new cationic styrene-acrylic easter co-polymer (SAE) micro- emulsion was investigated in laboratory experiments and on a pilot paper machine. The new SAE micro-emulsion could be used in different ways through adjusting the ratio of monomers. It was found to be a good water-resistant surface sizing agent. When its dosage was 2.5‰-4‰ per ton paper, the ink adsorption could reach 47% and the Cobb value could be 38 g/m2 if it was used as the surface sizing agent for culture paper. When it was used as the water-resistant surface sizing agent for fluting medium, the Cobb values of two sides could attain 40 g/m2 and 44 g/m2 respectively at the dosage of 2‰ per ton paper. In addition, The SAE micro-emulsion could also be used as the emulsifier for alkyl ketene dimer (AKD). When the emulsified AKD emulsion was used as the surface sizing agent for fluting medium, the curing time was much shorter and the dosage was lower leading to lower cost.
