In this paper, polyamide polyamine epichlorohydrin (PAE) resin was modified by a modifier M. And the factors affecting the preparation of modified PAE (M-PAE) were discussed, such as the dosage of modifier, the dosage of catalyst, the reaction time, and the reaction temperature. At the same time, the effect of modified PAE and commercial PAE on paper properties such as dry tensile index, wet tensile index, and the viscosity were also studied. The result showed that in the first stage of reaction, the optimal conditions were that the molar ratio of diethylenetriamine to adipic acid is 1.1:1, the dosage of catalyst is 1.0%, the reaction temperature is 170 °C, and holding time is 2h. In the second stage of reaction, the dosage of modifier M is 30%, the reaction temperature is 90 °C, and the reaction time is 4h. In the third stage of reaction, the reaction temperature is 60 °C, and the reaction time is 80 min. The ratio of wet strength to dry strength of the modified PAE reached up to 26%. Compared to commercial PAE, modified PAE appears to be cost effective.
