The mechanism of silicon retention oxides was studied using modern surface analysis techniques. The cooking conditions with oxide addition were optimized by means of uniform design, and different micro-morphology of fiber surface, the cell wall and different valence state were analyzed using multi-media microscope, Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results showed that more precipitation of the silica onto the pulp occurred under the optimum conditions compared to the Soda-AQ pulp. The mechanism of silicon retention by oxide was that silica compound reacted with silica dioxide and then was covered onto the epidermal cell groups as a layer of insoluble material.
