Nitrate pollution in groundwater is a serious hazard to people's health. Permeable reactive barriers (PRB) have become the core technology used to remediate nitrate pollution in groundwater. Seven different materials of normal compressive strength, viz. Shandong Longkou lignite, Inner Mongolia Pingzhuang lignite, Heilongjiang Sanjitun lignite, Yunnan Zhaotong lignite, anthracite, coke, and walnut shells were selected for denitrification-PRB media testing. Experimental results indicate that walnut shells had the highest nitrate removal efficiency, 80%, and their effluent concentration of NO3~N was under 3mg/L. Shandong Longkou lignite, Inner Mongolia Pingzhuang lignite, and Heilongjiang Sanjitun lignite also had the capability to release organic carbonsource slowly, and were able to be utilized effectively by the denitrifying bacteria. They could be used as the denitrification-PRB media.
