Development of noise measurement standard for inkjet large format printers

Large size printing is becoming more popular applications for CAD, graphics, POP etc., as well as those in regular office work. For the purposes of acoustical noise measurements, however, the existing de jule and/or industrial standards (such as ISO 7779, ANSI S12.10, JIS X 7779, ECMA-74, JBMS-74-1 etc.) state only test conditions based on, in most cases, A4 size printing. To resolve the issue, in 2008, JBMIA working group for investigation of acoustical noise standards & specifications had formulated a task team of developing relevant measurement specifications. The outcome of the technical works has been published as new industry standard of JBMIA, JBMS-74-2:2009, "Measurement of airborne noise emitted by information technology and telecommunication equipment — Part 2: Measurement method of airborne noise emitted from inkjet large format printers". The standard is also intended to become technical basis for future update of ECMA-74. This paper shows the development processes and the key features of the measurement procedures, such as paper specifications, operating modes, and measurement duration etc.
