Impulse response measurements are often the first step in the acquisition of room acoustic parameters. Signal to noise ratio dominates the accuracy of measurements and the noise free range of decay curves for analysis. In some adverse cases, signal to noise ratios can be inadequate, due to either the presence of non-trivial ambient noise or the preference of using low level stimuli for in-situ measurements. Prolonged measurements and/or synchronized averaging can theoretically improve effective signal to noise ratio and are therefore often used to mitigate the problem. The paper discusses impulse response measurement issues under noisy or low-level excitation conditions. Stimuli considered include swept-sine and maximum-length-sequence. Simulation and site measurement results are presented, compared and discussed.
