Based on the introduction of theoretic analysis on backwater length in reservoir area, a 2D numerical model is developed to simulate the phenomena of variation of backwater length in this paper. A simple example problem is presented to demonstrate the validity of theoretical analysis on the backwater length, as well as the comparative studies of influencing factors on backwater length are performed. The results indicate that in general there is an extreme value in the range of backwater length variation. Criterion for the terminal of backwater may influence not only on backwater length, but also on the rule of backwater length fluctuating with reservoir inflow. Higher precision of criterion for the terminal of backwater results in a greater extreme value of backwater length. While rough criterion for the terminal backwater may lead extreme value in the range of backwater length variation vanish. Conventional knowledge about the rule of backwater length variation is reasonable, which is a special case of theoretical solution to backwater length.
