With concrete in compression and steel in tension, simply supported steel-concrete composite beam is a very high ef ficient structural system to fully exploit the advantage of both materials. For the attractions in higher strength and stiffness,lighter self-weight and convenient construction, composite beams have been widely used in buildings and bridges. In this paper,an optimization design procedure on simply-supported composite beams was developed using the genetic algorithm toolbox in MATLAB. Based on the parameter study, the optimized span-depth ratios corre sponding to various load cases are proposed, and the technical indexes of composite beams are compared with steel beams,concrete beams and pre-stressed concrete beams.
