β-Sialon-Al{sub}2O{sub}3-SiC composite refractories were prepared using Si, Al and Al{sub}2O{sub}3 fine powders as starting materials for β-Sialon and Al{sub}2O{sub}3 and SiC as aggregates and sintering at 1500°C in flowing nitrogen. Analyses by SEM and XRD confirmed that the main phases consist of corundum and α-SiC, while the bonding phase is β-Sialon featured microscopically by fiber-like and hexagonallike crystals. It was revealed that appropriate addition of corundum and SiC can lead to improved strength and fracture toughness of β-Sialon bonded SiC material and β-Sialon bonded corundum material respectively. The composites also have good resistances to alkali and blast furnace slag.
