Characteristics of Pedestrian Walking Speeds in Sidewalk in Xi'an of China

A total of 2182 pedestrian operations data were collected in Xi'an. Statistical analyses were conducted to reveal which factors contribute to pedestrian speeds significantly. Author found that the data appeared to follow normal distribution and the average speed was 1.24 m/s, which is lower than that of European or American and approach to Asian. Younger people walk faster than older, aged 16 to 30 with average speed of 1.26m/s were the fastest group and aged over 60 with average speed of 1.12m/s were the slowest. Males with average speed of 1.30m/s walked faster 0.12m/s than females with average speed of 1.18m/s. Commuters or businessmen with average speed of 1.32m/s were fastest group, followed by pedestrians walking in leisure or tourists with average speed of 1.21 m/s, shoppers with average speed of 1.17m/s were the slowest. Results indicate that age, gender, travel purposes contribute to pedestrian speed significantly respectively except for baggage type. Age, travel purpose and baggage type contribute to each other in relation to affected pedestrian speed.
