Environmental Radiological Monitoring Programme around nuclear installations during the decommissioning process

Spanish Regulations require that an Environmental Radiological Monitoring Programme (PVRA)should be carried out during the different life stages of the plants: preoperational, operation, termination ofthe operation, dismantling and decommissioning. The Spanish Nuclear Safety Council published aRegulatory Guide to provide guidance on the design and development of this programmes around nuclearpower installations during the operation of the plant in routine situations and this Guide specifies that PVRAshould be adapted to the different life plant situations in order to evaluate the radiological impact of theplant due to the activities performed in each of them. In Spain at the moment two nuclear power installationsare undergoing the decommissioning process: Vandellós 1 NPP and the Centro de InvestigacionesEnergéticas Medioambientales y Tecnológicas (CIEMAT). José Cabrera NPP is in the situation oftermination of the operation. This paper presents the changes made in the PVRA carried out around theseinstallations in order to know the potential radiological impact due to radionuclide discharges to theenvironment as a result of the decommissioning process.
