The Gooding algorithm is currently the most widely used angles-only methodfor estimating the orbit of a spacecraft. Two modifications to Gooding’s angles-only initial orbit determination algorithm are presented. The first methodis an extension to N measurements, whereas the state of the art algorithm is restrictedto three measurements. The second modification is an optimizationmethod which searches in the neighborhood of the output of the classicalGooding algorithm for a more optimal orbit estimation. The theory is developedand examples are given.
