The Solution Calorimeter is designed for highest accuracy heat effect measurements and is used in general thermodynamic investigations. The Solution Calorimeter measurement refers to the determination of the heat effect when a solid is dissolved in a liquid. During measurement, the furnace maintains the measuring temperature constant to keep one alloy held in crucible in liquid state. The second alloy is dropped into the liquid alloy from room temperature. The heat effect generated or consumed when a solid sample is dissolved into the liquid is measured using thermopile and recorded using computer. Then the thermodynamic properties such as the enthalpy of formation compounds or enthalpies of mixing of liquid and amorphous phases which are important data for calculating the nonequilibrium phase calculation or predict the possible amorphous composition range in an alloy system can be determined. The designed solution calorimeter in Ames laboratory can be used for measuring temperature up to 15000C.
